I have to say first of all that I picked this up because of the cover. How many times do you see a frog on the cover of a soul record? I think there's a reason for that...
The record dealer had put a sticker on it saying 'produced by Michael Stokes'. As I had no idea who he was at the time I had to assume that this was some sort of badge of quality, the soul equivalent of 'with added essence of cherries' or the like. Having looked him up on the web he's had a pretty amazing career, definitely leaning towards a Philly soul kind of sound.
The LP itself is pretty good. Standout tracks for me are 'Thank you girl for loving me' and 'Sunshine', which was a minor hit single on the albums release back in 1976. There are a couple of more uptempo numbers, but personally I think they are a bit unforgettable - 'Dance to the music' is pretty decent.
As a whole, Enchantment's sound is similar to many of the vocal-harmony groups around at the same time - The Notations, The Trammps, Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes - it's got a very Gamble & Huff flavour to it. For an LP that seemed to do so well on original release, it doesn't seem to be that common, so if you like strings with your soul and think singing in harmony is a manly pursuit, I'd grab this if you see it.
There's plenty of info on the band at the Soulwalking website.
